Luna Tearfully Recalls Late f(x) Member Sulli and Her Own Struggles After Tragic Loss

In a deeply emotional appearance on KBS 1TV’s AM Plaza aired July 15, singer Luna—best known as a former member of the K-pop group f(x)—opened up about her past struggles, family sacrifices, and the lingering pain following the tragic death of her fellow group member Sulli.
Appearing alongside musical actress Choi Jung-won to promote their roles in Mamma Mia!, Luna spoke candidly during the “Tuesday Invitation” segment. Fighting back tears, she recalled her mother’s personal sacrifices during the economic crisis and her own harsh journey through illness and grief. “My mother majored in classical vocal music but gave it up during the IMF crisis. She helped at my grandmother’s sundae soup restaurant and suffered from chronic bronchitis. Her hands were always dark from preparing food. I didn’t understand it as a child, but I now see how beautiful and strong she was,” Luna said, visibly emotional.

Driven by the desire to ease her parents’ burdens, Luna trained relentlessly from age 14. “While others played, I practiced every day. I just wanted to give my parents a better life.” However, Luna’s path was far from easy. Between the ages of 25 and 30, she battled severe illness and burnout. “I couldn’t meet people, I felt unworthy of my job. My mother and sister wouldn’t leave my side. I even considered quitting music,” she revealed.
It was her mother’s unwavering support that helped her hold on. “She told me, ‘You always have a place to return to. It’s okay to fail. Try everything first.’” The broadcast also evoked heartfelt memories of Sulli, Luna’s close friend and f(x) bandmate who passed away in 2019 at just 25. The two shared over six years together under SM Entertainment, debuting and growing up in the spotlight side by side. In 2020, Luna quietly honored Sulli with a touching Instagram post, tagging her late friend in a shared photo with Krystal, another f(x) member.

Fans were moved by Luna’s honesty and resilience, expressing empathy for her journey and admiration for the bond she shared with Sulli. Her story serves as a reminder of the silent battles artists often endure behind the scenes—and the power of love, support, and healing.
